Rendezvous at the Museum am Strom

Directly at the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the “Oberes Mittelrheintal” (Upper Middle Rhine Valley), the Museum am Strom invites visitors to experience fascinating encounters with 2000 years of culture and history on the River Rhine: in addition to the sections on Rhine Romanticism, the Roman Era (“Das Binger Ärztebesteck”; a complete set of surgical instruments from a Roman doctor), Town History and Special Exhibitions, the large Hildegard of Bingen exhibition is the primary focus of what the museum has to offer.

On more than 300 square metres, a clear picture of the great Abbess is conveyed: in fascinating models, the long-destroyed Hildegard convent takes shape again while impressive artworks, precious originals (e.g. the first print of “Physica” of 1553) and elaborate graphical and reproductions bring her life and works into vivid perspective. Audio equipment introduces the musical works, and somewhat detached as it was, on the museum gallery with a view of the Rhine, Hildegard’s visionary world can be experienced in meditation with the help of largescale slide projections. Her role as a fearless admonisher and advisor even for emperors and bishops is another significant focus – with original documents from Hildegard’s time. In a word, to experience Hildegard of Bingen with all your senses – this is what the exhibition provides, together with the “Hildegarden” associated with her work on natural history. You will not find a more comprehensive documentation of the life and work of this Doctor of the Church than here in her historical setting in Bingen. The museum is also the starting point of the new Hildegard Path through Bingen’s town centre. Follow the traces of the saint and learn more about this fascinating woman and her times.
